Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music did not just draw interest back to this genre but also to Latin music as a whole. In 2015 there were two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. But during the peak of Despacito's fame in 2017 there were 19 mainly Spanish tracks which made it into the top 100. In 2020, the number was 41. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish-language version in 2017. In the year following, popular artists began working with reggaeton artists. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny for the production of MIA (2018) and Madonna worked on Medellin with Maluma (2019). In the year 2020, a handful of reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at the genre's direction toward the mainstream. However, a younger generation, led by Rauw Alejandro, sought to keep reggaeton evolving. He incorporated electronic dance styles as well as other styles into his music.
